Value Proposition

Measurement of the aortic valve opening area is an important parameter to assess valve stenosis. Cardiac CT angiography (CCTA) allows for accurate aortic valve morphological and functional assessment. Automated aortic valve area measurement would save the interpreting physician time via elimination of manual measurements, would prevent detection errors, and would provide structured quantitative data, which could be used in later studies or risk-stratification schemes.

Narrative(s)

All patients undergoing CCTA with functional data should have automated quantification of the aortic valve opening area if data are available, which may then be automatically populated into the radiology report or a report supplement.

Workflow Description

A patient receives electrocardiogram (ECG)-synchronized CTA of the chest. An algorithm retrieves input for the imaging data set and relevant electronic medical record data, including age, gender, and body surface area (mL/m2). The algorithm then determines the best single diastolic and single systolic phases of CT with the least motion artifact and performs the measurements defined below on systolic phases. Once the maximum aortic valve opening area is measured, all measurements are returned to the radiologist.
